Android TV

If you would rather work with a ready-made media box than with an SD card, Android TV is the simplest route. You install TargaScore as a normal app, pair the scoreboard, and configure the app to open automatically after startup.

Important note about automatic startup

The intention is that after a power cut the device starts up again and opens the TargaScore app automatically. That is how we advise configuring the device, but it is not a property we can commit to for every device and every firmware version. Always test it on the device that will be placed in the room.

Settings differ per device

The exact settings may depend on the Android version, the firmware and the device configuration.

Compatibility still being mapped out

An overview of tested devices and firmware versions is in preparation. Until it is available, we advise testing the behaviour after a power cut yourself before a device is placed in the room permanently. [Add tested installation procedure and compatibility overview]

TargaScore in the Google Play Store

TargaScore as an app on an Android TV device, for example the Formuler Z10 SE. You install the app from the Google Play Store.

Step-by-step

  1. Step 1: Switch the device on and connect it to the network

Connect a network cable or join a Wi-Fi network.

  2. Step 2: Sign in with a Google account

This is required to install apps from the Google Play Store.

  3. Step 3: Open the Google Play Store

    Use the device's remote control.

  4. Step 4: Search for the TargaScore app

Check that you are opening the right app before installing.

  5. Step 5: Install the app

Wait for the installation to finish.

  6. Step 6: Open TargaScore

The app asks for the pairing details of your environment.

  7. Step 7: Enter the TargaScore pairing details

You will find these in the admin portal, after logging in.

  8. Step 8: Set TargaScore to open automatically

Find the setting for starting an app automatically on the device.

The name and location of this setting differ per device and per Android version.

  9. Step 9: Test the behaviour after a power cut

Pull the plug, plug it back in, and check whether TargaScore comes on screen by itself.

  10. Step 10: Check again after a firmware update

A device update can undo settings.

About the Formuler Z10 SE

The Formuler Z10 SE is an Android TV media box: a small device you connect to the television with an HDMI cable and that can install apps from the Google Play Store. It has a network connection and is operated with a remote control.

That is enough for TargaScore: you install the app, pair the scoreboard, and set the app to open after startup. Other Android TV devices with Google Play may also be suitable; the overview of tested devices is still being built up.

Installing

Installation goes as it does for any other Android TV app: open the Play Store, find the app, install it and open it. The screens look slightly different per Android version, but the steps are the same. The full step-by-step guide is on this page.

Opening automatically after a power cut

For a busy room this is the most important point. The goal is that nobody has to reach for a remote control after a power cut:

  1. the device gets power again;
  2. the device starts up;
  3. TargaScore comes on screen by itself.

The device handles the first two steps itself. The third is a setting you make on the device. What that setting is called and where it lives differs per device and per Android version. If you get stuck, get in touch.

Always test the behaviour yourself before the device is placed in the room permanently. Pull the plug, plug it back in, and see what happens. Do that again after a firmware update of the device, because an update can reset settings.

Picture and power saving

Two settings are worth checking before a device goes into use:

  • picture fit. If overscan or automatic zoom is on, the edge of the scoreboard can fall outside the screen.
  • power saving. Televisions and media boxes sometimes switch themselves off after a while. For a scoreboard that has to stay on all evening, you will want to change that setting.

Troubleshooting

The TargaScore app is not in the Google Play Store

Check that the device has access to the Play Store and that it is signed in with a Google account. If the app is not there yet, check this page to see whether the store link has been published.

TargaScore does not open automatically after startup

Check whether the setting for automatic startup is still enabled; a firmware update may have reset it. If it will not work, get in touch and include the make and firmware version of the device.

After a power cut the device stays on the home screen

In that case opening the app automatically is not active or not supported on this device. Get in touch, mentioning the device and firmware version, and we will look into it.

The picture does not fit the screen properly

Check the picture settings on the television and on the Android TV device. Turn off overscan or automatic zoom if the screen has that setting.

The remote control does not respond

Check the batteries and whether the device is switched off. A Bluetooth remote may need to be paired again.

The device goes to sleep or switches the screen off

Look in the settings of the device and the television for power saving, screen saver or automatic switch-off, and adjust them to what you want in the room.
