The Raspberry Pi is a small, low-power computer that fits behind the television. You put the TargaScore image on an SD card, connect the device, and the screen shows the scoreboard. The device does nothing else, which makes the setup predictable.

Step-by-step
Step 1: Download the TargaScore image
The download is on this page, with the version number, release date and checksum.
Step 2: Download a program to write the image
Raspberry Pi Imager and balenaEtcher are both suitable and free.
Step 3: Insert the SD card into your computer
Use a card reader if needed.
Step 4: Write the image to the SD card
Check which card you select; writing erases the card.
Compare the checksum of the downloaded file before writing.
Step 5: Insert the SD card into the Raspberry Pi
Do this while the power supply is not yet connected.
Step 6: Connect HDMI, network and power
Connect the power last, so the device starts up with everything already attached.
Step 7: Start the system
The first startup takes longer than the ones after it.
Step 8: Enter the TargaScore pairing details
This pairs the scoreboard with your venue's environment.
Why a Raspberry Pi?
A Raspberry Pi is small, low-power and does exactly one thing: show the scoreboard. That makes the setup predictable. There are no other apps competing for attention, and no remote control is needed to get to the scoreboard.
For a fixed position next to a table, that is often the calmest choice.
Before buying hardware
First check the recommended model, the SD card and the power supply in the list of requirements on this page. Two things cause the most problems in practice:
- an underpowered supply. A device that starts up but then shuts down is almost always short of power.
- a cheap SD card. A card written to daily will fail at some point. Choose a card from a brand you know.
Writing the image
The TargaScore image is a complete system. You write it to the SD card with a program such as Raspberry Pi Imager or balenaEtcher. Both do the same thing: they put the file on the card and erase whatever was there.
Check the checksum before writing. If it does not match what is on this page, download the file again — a partially downloaded image causes problems that are hard to trace later.
After startup
The first startup takes longer than the ones after it. As soon as the scoreboard appears, it asks for the pairing details of your TargaScore environment. You will find those in the admin portal.
From that moment the screen belongs to your venue, and the settings you make centrally will reach this scoreboard.
Maintenance
- When a new image version is published, it appears on this page with a version number, release date and checksum.
- Note which version you wrote during installation; it helps when tracing a problem.
- Keep a spare SD card. If one fails, you are not left with a blank screen.

Troubleshooting
The screen stays black
Check that the television is set to the right HDMI input and that the HDMI cable is firmly attached at both ends. Try another HDMI input on the television if needed.
The device starts up but then shuts down
This usually points to a power supply that does not deliver enough power. Use the recommended supply, not a random phone charger.
The scoreboard does not appear after startup
Check that the SD card is seated properly. If the problem persists, write the image to a new card; SD cards wear out after heavy use.
There is no network connection
Check the network cable or the Wi-Fi signal where the device is. The manual has a separate explanation of configuring the network connection.
I do not know which image version is installed
Note the version number of the image when you install it. This page always shows the most recently published version.
